The development of the telecommunications business in Brazil is a story of two tales. The telecommunications services revenue in Brazil was estimated at over 47.24 million Brazilin reals in 2021, and its  investments in the South American country  amounted to 25.5 billion Brazilian reals in 2021 billion dollars. The average revenue per user (ARPU) of telecommunications services in Brazil is useful to unfold two contrasting trends. While the ARPU of mobile telephony and broadband internet has been growing, the ARPU of fixed telephony, fixed broadband internet, and pay TV has been decreasing.

Internet services: an ongoing trend

Brazilians are still craving to go and to stay online. In 2020, there were approximately 17.1  fixed broadband subscriptions per 100 inhabitants  in the Portuguese-speaking country – an increase of over 37 percent compared to the roughly 12.5 fixed connections per 100 people recorded five years before. Likewise, mobile internet is more relevant than ever since 99 percent of  internet users access the web with their phones . Furthermore, Brazil is expected to lead the  5G era in Latin America , accounting for around one out of five 5G mobile connections in the region by 2025.

The twilight of fixed telephony?

This segment saw a slow but steady decline throughout the 2010s. As of 2021, there were 28.7 million  landlines in service , the smallest number since 2000. Similarly, the  gross revenue generated by fixed telephony services  amounted to around 19.5 billion Brazilians reals in 2020 – the lowest result in the 21st century. This downturn may reflect the change of the times, as mobile telephony and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) grow in use and quality. However, political choices, too, play a role in this market. In a country where nearly 25 percent of the population still had no  access to the internet  in 2021, time will tell if it was too soon to start discarding fixed telephony altogether.
