Online courses and schooling started developing in the late 1990s. However, the entire online education system had to rapidly develop in 2020 because of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. In Romania, many educational units switched to online classes though platforms such as Google classroom , Moodle, or Zoom. Despite the availability of online means and technological developments, the coronavirus pandemic caught the Romanian education system rather unprepared, with no pre-established protocols, and medium to little support provided for educational staff . In other words, one month after educational insitutions first closed, online classes were implemented for only six out of ten students , and primarily for subjects such as Romanian language and literature or mathematics.

Disadvantages of online school in Romania

One of the most important limitations of the Romanian online education system was the lack of support for students with special needs , as well as the lack of authentic communication, human contact or interaction among children of the same age. Unfortunately, the reason which prevented most children to attend online classes was the absence of technical equipment . Many children in rural areas or poor neighborhoods did not own a smartphone or did not have access to a laptop, a tablet, or a printer to complete their day-to-day school activities. Another limitation of the online education system was the lack of internet connection , especially in rural environments. Consequently, not only professors, but also parents and Romanian authorities expressed their concern regarding the students who graduated in the academic year 2020/2021 because of the quality of the education received.

Parental support for children during online school

Parental and educational support for children during online classes in 2020 was essential not only for a thorough understanding of subjects, but also for a proper and unhindered emotional development. By July 2020, seven out of ten children were satisfied with their teacher’s level of involvement in online classes since schools first closed in March. However, because of working schedules, many parents were not able to help their children during online lessons, the majority spending only up to two hours a day assisting with homework activities . As a result, many children wished for better understanding and more support to get though these difficult times from both educators and parents.
